Animal husbandry capacity of Kermanshah Province
Kermanshah Province, as one of the key centers of animal husbandry in the country, possesses extensive capacities for producing animal products. According to available statistics, the province is home to approximately 4.65 million animal units, which include 3,156,399 small ruminants (sheep and goats) and 274,313 large ruminants (cattle and calves). Additionally, there are 39 feed production factories in the province with an annual capacity of 1,969,000 tons of animal feed for animals and poultry.
The province is also known for two prominent animal breeds: the Kurdish horse, which was nationally registered in 2022, with a population exceeding 7,000, and 50 active horse breeding units. Furthermore, the Sanjabi sheep, known for its high-quality wool and meat, thrives in harsh living conditions and can withstand various geographical environments. The Sanjabi sheep is considered one of the most important sources of meat and wool in the province and enjoys significant popularity among local breeders due to its adaptability to the regional climate.
• Red Meat: Annually, approximately 42,000 tons of red meat are produced in the province, which is nearly double the region’s consumption needs.
• Raw Milk: The annual production of raw milk in the province exceeds 335,000 tons, demonstrating the province’s high capacity in this sector.
• Poultry Meat: With 700 industrial poultry farms, the province produces over 70,000 tons of chicken meat annually.
• Eggs: The province produces approximately 11,000 tons of eggs per year, contributing to both local consumption and exports.
• Honey: Benefiting from favorable climatic conditions and diverse vegetation, Kermanshah produces around 2,874 tons of honey annually.
There are more than 1,333 active industrial animal farms in Kermanshah Province, including 700 industrial broiler farms and 176 dairy cattle farms. These units play a crucial role in supplying the province’s and the country’s animal products.
With over 950,000 hectares of agricultural land, Kermanshah Province produces approximately 4.7 million tons of various agricultural, animalistic ,and horticultural products annually. These capacities highlight the province’s significant potential in providing the necessary raw materials for the animal industry.
Despite the province’s considerable animal farming capacities, challenges such as drought, water scarcity, and the need for improved animal infrastructure persist. However, there are multiple opportunities for the development of this industry, including the adoption of modern technologies, breed improvement, and the expansion of export markets.
Overall, by leveraging its existing capacities and appropriate planning, Kermanshah Province can play a pivotal role in ensuring the country’s food security and advancing the animal industry.
